Step 1 | Creating your Digital Human

Everything your Digital Human needs to come to life.

Create the looks, sound, movements and behavior of your Digital Human. Based on research (Willemsen, Brom, Withuis, Van Hooijdonk, 2024) we know Digital Humans are assessed on these four different elements. We can help you to balance these elements for maximum connection between the Digital Humans and its audience.

Looks

The added value? At least you feel like you're being seen, heard by someone. Because you're looking at a human face [...] it's quite pleasant."

A universe of Digital Humans to align with your brand values

The looks of a Digital Human greatly influence the way users asses the Digital Human. Therefore it is important to align the design of your Digital Human with your brand values, or to tailor it to your target audience.

It is equally important to consider how realistic your Digital Human should be - would a cartoon or other representation such as an object or animal resonate more with your audience? We will help you determine which option is best from a variety of options available to you.

Physical Appearance Options

To make your life easier and to get you started without too much custom work, we have created a few pre-configured Digital Humans that can be used by any of our customers for their projects. Whilst these Digital Humans are fully ready to use, research has shown that users do not respond positively to repetitively seeing the same face with different organizations, so we always advise some level of customization to your Digital Human.

  • MetaHumans

  • Cartoon

When you or your user do not want a photorealistic Digital Human, we can help you with any cartoonish looking version. Let us know your requirements and we can realize your design.cartoon

  • Customization

All standard Digital Humans can be customized when it comes to their hair, clothing and accessories to tailor the Digital Human to the local culture or specific use case within an organization, and to give it a certain uniqueness.Customization

  • Your Unique Digital Human

We can also create your own custom Digital Human, ensuring you will have a person and personality that is unique to your organization. When creating a custom Digital Human, we offer the following options:

MetaHuman: With the MetaHuman Creator (by Epic Games) we can compose a Digital Human just like you want to. You can take a standard model as shown above and then change the shape and size of its face, eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. You can also choose your own skin tone, hair color, haircut, accessories and many more. The MetaHuman you have created will be exported and loaded into our platform so it will be able to speak with our standard  voices and leverage the animations that exist in the platform.

Photo realistic: We have various ways to create a Digital Human based on an actual person, using photo, video recordings or a 3D scan of that person. The newly created Digital Human will then be able to speak with our standard voices and leverage the animations that exist in the platform.

Object / Cartoon: Leveraging ‘traditional’ CGI, we can also create and animate any other (cartoonish) figure or object.

Sound

The power of voice

The importance of sound is often underestimated, as using voice impacts the entire conversation. We know that users who not only interact by reading text, but also by listening to speech and looking at expressions are more focussed into the conversation which results in more trust, better remembering what has been said and being more likely to follow the Digital Human’s advice.

This video provides a good example of the range of voices and the quality of the avatars available.

We are conditioned to feel what we hear

A Digital Human’s voice should match the look and feel that you have chosen. Nowadays there are a lot of voices to chose from or you can even create a custom voice just for your brand. The platform is connected to the following text-to-speech (TTS) providers:

Depending on the TTS solution and the preferred language, you can additionally control your voice’s characteristics like its speaking style, pitch, volume, speed and emphasis or create custom dictionaries for bespoke pronunciations. Let us know your requirements and then we will gladly advise you to the right solution, even if that means we have to integrate it for you.

Just like the animations, the speech of our Digital Humans is generated in real-time so they can speak any AI generated answer as soon as we receive it from the Conversational AI platform. Did you know you can even choose for multilingual voices so you will have the same voice in different languages? And did you know speech recognition is also capable of recognising the language ? This means if a user speaks in any language, the answer can be in that same language as well?

Moves

If  verbal and non-verbal cues are in conflict, you will always believe the non-verbal message.
A picture is worth a thousand words

From experience we know that the more the Digital Human and its users mirror each-others expressions, the more rapport and connection there will be. Strong connections increase the effectiveness of your Digital Human, allowing it to influence the user and setting you up to better reaching your goals.

A Digital Human can look perfectly, but as soon as it starts to move the feeling still needs to be humanlike and/or natural. We often see a disconnect between looks and animation, and that has proven to be a huge detractor for customers. That is why our platform allows you to control our Digital Humans on a very detailed level, so you can take full control over your Digital Human's movements.

This video provides good examples of the avatar movements available to you.

Facial expressions designed to drive acceptance

Off course we don’t leave you alone with unlimited options, so we have created pre-defined animations for commonly used expressions like smiling, frowning, brow raises, winking, eye gazes, nodding and head turns. Most of these animations come in different levels of intensity so you can use a small, medium or large smile to convey a positive feeling to your users.

Other options to control the Digital Humans animations are to use emotional states like happy, inquiring, approving etc. or to connect specific words to a certain animation. Whatever your project requires, we will guide you to the best possible way to leverage our extensive animation control, in a user friendly way.

Behavior

Combine the looks, sound, and expressions of your Digital Human to turn it into a unique personality.
Where imagination meets technology

When you have carefully built the looks, sound and moves of your Digital Human, it is time to bring everything together and to fuel your Digital Human with a unique behavioral character.

This step is about crafting a persona and defining how your Digital Human will acknowledge, confirm,  ask, deny while keeping in mind what you find important rules and values.
